Saint Nicholas, a tradition in Belgium and the Low Countries
In Belgium, the Netherlands, northern and eastern France, good children get a visit from Saint Nicholas (Sinterklaas) on the night of 5 to 6 December. They leave their shoes by the fireplace with a carrot or a sugar lump for his donkey, and sometimes a letter with their wishes.
